4th Grade Newsletter - Week of 9-6-2010

Reading This week we are continuing on in our first theme (Journeys) in our reading anthology.  The story we read this week is a non-fiction story called Finding the Titanic by Robert Ballard.  The comprehension skill we are working on with this story is “Text Organization in non-Fiction”.

MathWe are working on addition word problems with missing addends, adding three-digit numbers, and subtraction with missing numbers.
Writer’s WorkshopWe are beginning our unit on blog writing.  This week we learned more about what blogs are, how they are used, and how comments work.

Science – We are finishing up our first unit and taking the test over it.  We are also starting our next unit, which is a long unit, over the different human body systems.

Social StudiesWe are starting our second unit in US Geography.  In this unit we are learning about the Eastern Region of the US (the cities, climates, resources, etc.)

Bible Study/ReligionThis week we read about and discussed the story of God’s covenant with Abram, and Abraham and Lot.

Dates to Remember

-          Sunday, Sept. 12th is All School Sing & Community Fair
-          Friday Sept. 17th is a 1//2 day of school and also the Golf Tournament
-          No School October 6-8th (Fall Break/Teachers at a conference)

News and Notes:
I would like to first start off with a couple of reminders.  Please remember that 1st Quarter Book Reports are due on Wednesday October 20th.  Also remember that the golf tournament is coming up soon.  It’s still not too late to register!  I wanted to mention as well that the students will be having a test on Thursday, October 21st over the US states and capitals.  On this test the students will be receiving a blank US map in which they will be writing in the names of each state.  On this same test they will have many questions over the capitals of the different states.  I am mentioning this now so that students can begin studying the state locations and capitals so they can be successful on this test.  We will work on this some in class, but students should be studying at home as well.  In the past, students who have studied well at home have done great on the test.  If you have any questions just let me know.
